Reason. Science. Metal.: The Exception of Religious Discourse: "Somehow, when the topic changes to religious beliefs, the rules of conversation change. The pressure one would receive making any of the other statements is simply not felt. It's not as though Jackie could furnish you with evidence or arguments unavailable to the other propositions. She can't. All four beliefs suffer from either internal or external logical inconsistencies."
I have been having countless discussions on this, and they all pretty much resolved in a metadiscussion about respecting one's "faith," confirming that some irrational beliefs just cannot be touched. Ironically, "progressive" political correctness has made this even more the case: you are called a "bigot" if you disrespect somebody else's irrational belief system, in spite of the fact that those very unfouned beliefs could discriminate against you.
